My Blog’s 10th Anniversary

I started my blog 10 years ago this month. It was part of my transition from being career focused for more than 40 years. And I’ve kept it going – it’s an enjoyable daily rhythm for me. I’m savoring my history of the past decade in this post.

The blog posts from 2011 included a trip to Longwood Gardens and a long road trip to Tucson, Arizona (with photos of rest stops along the way) where my daughter was in graduate school. I stated the gleanings of the week and enjoyed posting recipes and photographs of places I was visiting. The new technology was a Kindle Fire; I was making the transition from physical to digital books…it would take several more years to complete the transition and I’d graduated from the Kindle Fire to an iPad, Smartphone (and laptop) for reading. Some of my favorite posts form 2011 include: Recipe of the Week: Homemade Soup for a Cold Day, Water Lily Pictures, and 10 Cosmetics from the Kitchen.

In 2012, I started the monthly ‘10 days of little celebrations’ and experienced the trauma of my parents getting older…beginning to experience substantial health problems. We added a bird feeder on our deck – visible from my office window and I started enjoying birdwatching through the window. Some of my favorite posts include: Birds from my Office Window, Gray Day Reflections, Yucca Seed Pods, and Ten Days of Little Celebrations - November 2012.

The next year I started the zooming and free eBooks posts. Over the years my camera’s optical zoom capabilities have improved dramatically and I enjoy using it to get better images. By this time, I was almost completely transitioned to digital books too. We made a road trip to Florida for a satellite launch at Cape Canaveral and I got my first close view of Sandhill Cranes in the Orlando airport cell phone lot waiting for my daughter to arrive. Some of my favorite posts close to that anniversary include: 3 Free eBooks - December 2013, Sandhill Cranes in Florida - November 2013, Herons in Florida - November 2013, and Zooming - December 2013.

In 2014, I started my effort to reduce the ‘stuff’ we had accumulated from living for more than 25 years in our house. My volunteer work has gradually increased…and would be easily sustained until the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of my favorite posts from the end of 2014 include: The Grand Cleanout - December 2014, December Sunrise, and Fall Field Trips.

The big event at the end of 2015 was our travel to the big island of Hawaii…including a day trip to the top of Maunakea. It was an wonderful experience but I find myself wondering if I ever want to take a long flight like that again.

2016 was our first birding festival – the Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache. We also discovered the Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam, closer to home. I started my monthly Zentangle posts. Here are some sample posts: Highlights of 2016, Conowingo - December 2016, Zentangle® – November 2016, and First Day at Bosque del Apache.

I started the monthly eBotantical Prints posts in November 2017. I’d been browsing historical botanical books in the last decade of my career and was beginning to figure out a way to share my list. At the time I thought that I had about exhausted the supply, but I’ve continued to add 20 or so books every month until there are now over 2,200 books on the list!

In 2018 we attended our second Festival of the Cranes in New Mexico then enjoyed the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival early in 2019.

In the last few months of 2019, there was a last road trip with my parents at Thanksgiving. We enjoyed the Christmas lights near home and planned for a birding festival in Laredo, TX in the early part of 2020.

As we were coming back from the Laredo birding festival, COVID-19 was in the news and soon we were ‘staying at home as much as possible’. By November 2020, we were anticipating that a vaccine was going to become available and the pandemic would end. We were doing virtual birding festivals and otherwise keeping ourselves happy at or close to home.

And here I am in November 2021, still not like I was pre-pandemic. I enjoy many of the same things I have in the past 10 years, but I am not out venturing into crowds…not flying. I am facing a health challenge of my own (cancer). My parents are home bound in Texas, and I have made visiting them my rationale for 3 road trips since the spring when I became fully vaccinated. At this point, it is not the pandemic that causes most of my anxiety, but the changed behavior (sometimes abrasive and violent) of people under stress that has become so apparent over the past year.

The blog continues…it’s a way to document my present….and notice the subtle changes in the way I am ‘living well.’

eBotanical Prints – November 2021

20 botanical print books browsed in October and added to the list. The browsing seemed to clump by topic and some series. There were 2 volumes about plant fossils, 2 about flower/plant art, 2 books about apples, 5 about the flora of Austria (from the 1770s) 5 about flora around London from the same time period, and 2 about the grasses of Iowa.  Both the apple and grasses volumes were from the early 1900s; I wondered how many of the varieties in these publications still exist. Overall – a lot of variety in the October 2021 books.

The whole list of 2,249 botanical eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the October books is at the end of this post.

eBotanical Prints – September 2021

21 botanical print books browsed in September and added to the list. They were published over almost 300 years (1793 to 1981). The most recent volumes are documentation of threatened and endangered species. The earliest (Icones plantarum rariorum - Vol 3, sample image) was a volume from a series I had found before – but somehow missed this volume. There were some beautiful illustrations of plants I’m familiar with: tulip poplar, jack-in-the-pulpit, deciduous magnolia, maples, oaks, holly. There were also two volumes of plant imprints…geological botanical prints. I found several volumes that were fruit focused…more to come of those finds in October. Overall – a lot of variety in the September 2021 volumes.

The whole list of 2,229 botanical eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the September books is at the end of this post.

eBotanical Prints – August 2021

21 botanical print books in August and added to the list. There is quite an age range in this group. The first 10 are from the early 1900s and are a continuation of the Jakob Sturm series I started browing in July. . The rest were published earlier; one is quite old – back to 1625!

There is something to enjoy in the botanical illustrations in all these volumes. I admire the meticulous detail recorded throughout the years, the colors that have remained vibrant for over 100 years, and the perseverance it must have taken for the authors to create and then publish their works.

The whole list of 2,209 botanical eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the August books is at the end of this post.

eBotanical Prints – July 2021

20 botanical print books browsed in July and added to the list. There still seem to be a lot of botanical works to discover and browse – freely available from various sources on the internet. All the volumes this month are found on Internet Archive.

The first 7 volumes browsed in July were produced by Johann Hieronymus Kniphof using a process called “nature printing” that flattened the plants to produce the image…making them look much like herbarium specimens.

My favorite volume of the month was probably Thomas Taylor’s Drawings of Fungi --- maybe because they were so different from the other volumes.

Toward the end of month – I started the Jakob Sturm series; there are more to enjoy browsing in August! Online it isn’t obvious that the engravings were small (no more than 5 by 3.5 inches); they were made to be affordable to more people when they were originally published in the 1800s and remained in print through the early 1900s!

The whole list of 2,187 botanical eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the July books is at the end of this post.

Rose Georgina Kingsley

One of the books that I added to my list of botanical print books this month was Roses and Rose Growing by Rose Georgina Kingsley. The pictures of roses and learning a bit about the author appealed to me.

She does not have an entry in Wikipedia…not even listed in the entry for her father, Charles Kingsley. She was the oldest child and evidently followed her younger brother to Colorado Springs in 1871 (a few years before her father died) but was back in England and establishing Learnington High School (now The Kingsley School) for girls by 1884.

Her first book that I found on Internet Archive was South by west; or Winter in the Rocky Mountains and spring in Mexico – published in 1874, a year before her father died – about her experience in Colorado and travel into Mexico. Her father wrote the preface and edited the book; her name is not on the title page even though she wrote everything except the preface and created the illustrations! The metadata on Internet Archive makes the attribution but puts her name in brackets. Maybe it was easier to get the book published with her father’s name.

All the other books I found for her on Internet Archive are from the period where she was also establishing and running the school:

The Children of Westminster Abbey in 1886

The History of French Art in 1899

Eversley Gardens and Others in 1907

Roses and rose growing in 1908

Garden colour: Spring in 1911

I was surprised that I couldn’t find a complete biography for her.  She left a legacy in her writings and her school that is significant – maybe that is the way she wanted to be remembered rather than what someone else wrote about her.

eBotanical Prints – May 2021

20 botanical print books browsed in May and added to the list. I am in the process of browsing the  Flora Brasiliensis volumes (started in April…continued in May…and will be  finished in June). I browse the volumes in Internet Archive but it is easier to find all the volumes in Botanicus…enabling me to find them all very easily.

Something unusual in this group: The V12 pt 3 volume included some pages with scanning anomalies…but I thought they looked very art-like. The sample image for the volume is a normal looking scan (in the mosaic of images for the month); that are three examples of pages with the scanning anomaly below.

The whole list of 2,147 botanical eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the May books is at the end of this post.

eBotanical Prints – April 2021

20 botanical print books browsed in April and added to the list. There was a variety at the beginning then a series (Flora Brasiliensis) which I will continue browsing in May. I browse the volumes of Flora Braziliensis in Internet Archive but it is easier to find all the volumes in Botanicus.

There was quite an age range for the books in April too – 1786 to 1976…with the early 1900s dominating.

The whole list of 2,218 eBooks can be accessed here. The list for the April books is at the end of this post.

eBotanical Prints – March 2021

I finished browsing the rest of the Arnoldia volumes (from the Arnold Arboretum) available via Internet Archive in March; there are 24 of them. Sometimes the volumes are a single issue…sometimes groups of issues (not always divided on year boundaries). I am looking forward to the variety of botanical prints that are not from a series in April!

The whole list of 2,108 eBooks can be accessed here.

Click an any sample images below to get an enlarged version. Note that Arnoldia sometimes includes articles on historical botanical illustrations…sometimes includes traditional botanical drawings…and a lot of photography. Enjoy the March eBotanical Prints!

eBotanical Prints – February 2021

20 new books for the botanical prints list in January – all from Internet Archive. I started through the magazines of the Arnold Arboretum (Arnoldia) toward the end of January and all 20 of the ‘books’ for February are that magazine…and the browsing continues in March.

These volumes are from the past few decades rather than the past few centuries which is often the case with the eBotanical prints monthly posts. There is one image for each of the 20 new books; click an any sample images below to get an enlarged version. Enjoy the February eBotanical Prints! eBotanical Prints – January 2021

22 new books for the botanical prints list in January – all from Internet Archive. 7 are a continuation from December: the annual publication from the Georgia Botanical Society (Tipularia).  I started through the magazines of the Arnold Arboretum (Arnoldia) toward the end of the month. The dates for the publications range from 1822 to 2018…close to 200 years but not as broad as some recent months. There is one image for each of the 22 new books; click an any sample images below to get an enlarged version. Enjoy the January eBotanical Prints! The whole list of 2063 eBooks can be accessed here.

eBotanical Prints – December 2020

20 new books for the botanical prints list in December….all from the Internet Archive. 12 of them are an annual publication from the Georgia Botanical Society published between 1986 and 2005; there are 7 more that I looked at in January and will include in next month’s eBotanical Prints post.

Just as in previous months, there is quite a range in the publication dates: 1687 to 2005. And different types of images: drawings, colored prints, and photographs. There is one image for each of the 20 new books; click an any sample image below to get an enlarged version. Enjoy the December eBotanical Prints! eBotanical Prints – November 2020

20 new eBooks added to the botanical prints list in November. They are all available from Internet Archive. The oldest is from 1682 – The Anatomy of Plants by Nehemiah Grew – the ‘father of plant anatomy.’ 6 books were published in the 1700s and the rest in the 1800s. I enjoyed the variety of books I browsed since I had been making my way through Annals of Botany for 2 months (September and October)! When I selected the sample images – I thought about why I made the selections I did from all the wonderful images in these books. Sometimes I choose because I know and enjoy the plant…sometimes it’s the color…sometimes it is a plant totally new to me. Overall – I like the mosaic of images in the post (and that each image can be enlarged with a click). Enjoy the November eBotanical Prints! The whole list of 2021 eBooks can be accessed here.

eBotanical Prints – October 2020

20 new items added to the collection in October and, like September, they are all volumes of Annals of Botany. The Biodiversity Heritage Library has the volumes fully available from 1888 (when the publication started) until 1923; the access page has a pull down to select the volume of interest. I finished the series in October and am thrilled to be looking at some very different individual works already in November. By the end of the series, it seemed like I needed to just slog through to the last one. The images in the Annals were for research and I found myself looking at them more as starting points for Zentangle pattern development than as botanical prints.

The whole list of 2002 books can be accessed here. Sample images and links for the 20 new ones are provided below. (click on the sample image to see a larger view). Enjoy!

eBotanical Prints – September 2020

19 new items added to the collection in September and they are all volumes of the same publication: Annals of Botany. The Biodiversity Heritage Library has the volumes fully available from 1888 (when the publication started) until 1923; the access page has a pull down to select the volume of interest. I looked at the volumes from 1888 to 1905 in September and will continue through the rest in October. So far – most of the illustrations are more micro oriented than the typical ‘botanical print’ but it’s another aspect of illustration of the botanical world that I want to include in the collection.

The whole list of 1,982 books can be accessed here. Sample images and links for the 19 new ones are provided below. (click on the sample image to see a larger view). Enjoy!

Unique Activities for Yesterday:

Maple tree seedling update. The maple seedling that I pulled from the front flowerbed is still healthy in the window. It’s grown a little - both in the upper stem/leaves and the roots. It will be interesting to see if the leaves turn red at the same time as the red maple outside or if they stay green because it is warmer on my windowsill than outdoors.

I am still enjoying flower from the CSA cutting garden but they’re probably close to the end. There were not as many to choose from this week and they don’t seem to last as long as cut flowers.

eBotanical Prints – August 2020

20 botanical eBooks in August 2020! The time range is quite long in this group from 1700 to 1999. The 4 Weinmann books are the only ones in color this month and they are quite old – from the 1700s.

The volumes are all freely available on the Internet. The whole list of 1963 books can be accessed here. Sample images and links for the 20 new ones are provided below. (click on the sample image to see a larger view). Enjoy!

Some of the Saguaroland Bulletins are included in this group; they are not strictly botanical but do have some good images (and I was savoring memories of visiting the Desert Botanical Garden in recent year when my daughter was doing her graduate work in Tucson). There is also a very early botanical book in this group: Pierre Vallet’s Le jardin du Roy tres chrestien, Loys XIII, Roy de France et de Navare published in 1623.

Unique Activities for Yesterday:

2 tiles. I created to Zentangle tiles during my early morning hour on the deck as usual. For some reason they both appealed to me more than usual…and for different reasons. I was thinking ‘solar prominence’ as I finished up the first one.

img059.jpg

The second one only took 9 minutes to make but I’m already thinking of making more tiles with the same string.

Clean Birdbath. I saved the scrubbing of the bird bath until the end of my hour cutting day lily leaves in the front flower bed. The glass held the grunge (biofilm?) when I dumped the accumulated rain water.

20200808_082301.jpg

The spray got some off and then the scrubbing with an old dishrag got the rest.  There is something very satisfying about a clean birdbath…with and without water…but of course the water is what it’s all about! I’ve always liked this birdbath – carefully taking it indoors before the first frost and not bringing it out again until after the frosts are over. I bought it during a sale of seasonal things at the grocery store years ago. The stand stays out and has gradually become more buried in the mulch of the flowerbed.

Dryer broken. Aargh! Our dryer stopped working. It’s probably the heating element since we’ve had the problem before, and the tumbler part of the dryer is still functioning. My husband keeps excellent records and discovered that the element was replaced in 2006. We were able to get an appointment for a maintenance person to replace it in 7 days. Fortunately – it was sheets and not the load of towels that was in the washer when we discovered the problem. I draped plastic table clothes over the loft railing….and draped the sheets over that (and the shower rod). The house looks odd but we’re the only ones here and are relieved that we don’t have to find a laundry place or figure out how to create a clothesline on the covered deck! We were only discombobulated for about 10 minutes and now we are back to our regular Saturday activities. It’s a good indication of how resilient we are at this point!

There are several series this month:

  • 7 issues of The English Garden magazine from the mid-2010s

  • 2 issues of Your Garden magazine from the 2010s

  • 2 volumes from Asa Gray published in the mid-1800s

  • 2 volumes from Johann Zorn published in the 1790s

  • 2 volumes of camellias from the mid-1800s

  • 2 volumes from H.A. Weddell from the mid-1800s

  • 3 volumes from Augustine Pyramus de Candolle from the early to mid-1800s

The most surprising to me was the Hesperides, sive, De malorvm avreorvm cvltvra et vsv libri quatuor by Giovanni Battista Ferrari published in 1646….about citrus fruits. The wild forms are quite different than the ones we know today in the grocery store!

eBotanical Prints – May 2020

Continuing the blog post series prompted by COVID-19….

There’s quite a variety this month starting with 6 volumes of Florists Journal from the mid-1800s and 3 books that could be finished with watercolor paints (or Zentangles) from the later 1800s. Following that come two botany texts from the 1800s (the one with the color illustrations was published more than 40 years before the one with drawings)  and a book about trees with photographs of winter/summer versions of the same tree (this is a good book to learn the shapes of different kinds of trees with the oak being the ‘sample images’). Then there are two volumes by Hooker of northern British American plants and the last one with a sample image is plants from around Paris. The last volume for the month is a website and I included it because it is a current – and excellent – reference for the northern forest…lots of detailed illustrations.

Unique activities for yesterday:

Noting the sycamore recovery from May frost damage. There are small dead leaves on the tree but there are also green and growing leave of all sizes.

IMG_0105.jpg

Processing mint. I worked on the front flower beds pulling grass and cutting vines growing up through the bushes. I also cut a basket full of mint. It’s growing fast right now and the tender leaves are excellent additions to smoothies, salads, and tea. They smell so good! I rinsed the whole ball of leaves and stems, let it dry a bit, separated leaves from tougher stems and processed all those tender parts in the Ninja. Small pieces compress a lot. They are now in a gallon Ziploc in the freezer, pressed thin so that I can easily break the contents into whatever size I want.

Day lily buds. There are day lily buds coming up through the leaves. I was excited to see them. I’ll have the flowers to bring indoors soon. Maybe the milkweed that is in the same flower bed will hide the buds from the deer (in prior years, the deer had gotten most of the buds before they could bloom). I’ll cut the buds this year as soon as they’re big enough to bloom in water. There are also black-eyed susans amongst the day lilies and milkweed. Hopefully, they’ll provide flowers later this summer. The deer generally leave them alone

A Zentangle Prompt

Make a tile with TWISTEE and UNDLING (feel free to add another pattern or two of your choice).

Here is a tile I made yesterday based on the prompt: GINGO and TUMBLEWEED
