Twenty more books were added to the botanical print collection in March – available for browsing on Internet Archive. The publication date range for this group is over 400 years: 1569 to 1993 with 4 volumes in the 1500s, 4 volumes in the 1600s, 4 in the 1700s, 1 in the 1800s, and 7 in the 1900s.

Twenty more books were added to the botanical print collection this month – available for browsing on Internet Archive. More than half of the books are Harvard’s Botanical Museum Leaflets from 1957 to 1982. These are relatively modern botanical prints! The rest of the volumes for October are “Contributions from the Gray Herbarium.” My favorite image is the next to last: silhouettes of Monstera leaves.

eBotanical Prints – September 2022

20 botanical print books in September. My favorite books are the third and last ones on the list…because they reminded me of some of my own history. The third book is about the plants of the Four Corners area of the southwest US (New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah) – a lot of great vacation memories over the past 50 years. The last book on the list is about gladioli and it reminded me of my maternal grandfather’s garden in the 1960s. He had a long row of gladioli and there were always plenty of flower stalks to cut for bouquets; the most common place for the big vase was on top of the tea cart under my grandmother’s portrait; that tea cart is now in my daughter’s house.

eBotanical Prints – October 2020

20 new items added to the collection in October and, like September, they are all volumes of Annals of Botany. The Biodiversity Heritage Library has the volumes fully available from 1888 (when the publication started) until 1923; the access page has a pull down to select the volume of interest. I finished the series in October and am thrilled to be looking at some very different individual works already in November. By the end of the series, it seemed like I needed to just slog through to the last one. The images in the Annals were for research and I found myself looking at them more as starting points for Zentangle pattern development than as botanical prints.

New Masks

I bought 3 new masks since I want to have plenty to last me between laundry days….and it’s hot enough that I might want a fresh one if I’m out in the afternoon for very long. I ordered them from Society6.

These masks are heritage type prints – from books I was familiar with. The poppy and dandelion are from Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal (available from Internet Archive here). I browsed through it back in 2009.

The solar eclipse one is from Etienne Leopold Trouvelot’s Astronomical Drawings (available from Internet Archive here). I browsed the images in 2019.

These masks are a little different than the 2 I already am using so I’ll wear one for an hour or so around the house to make sure it is comfortable enough for the time it takes to pickup my CSA share (and cut some flowers/herbs in the cutting garden) and buy groceries. I am going to keep a Ziploc of fresh masks in the car for the foreseeable future.

Unique Activities for Yesterday:

Tweaking the office. I am back to using my bouncy Swopper chair in front of my computer. It seems I am becoming pickier about how my office ‘fits’ my needs with being at home so much of the time. My back is happy today!

Breakfast picnic. I cut up the cantaloupe in chunks and cooked scrambled eggs. My husband cooked hash browns and bacon. And we ate the big breakfast out on our deck. It was the most pleasant temperature of the day. We were fortified enough to mow the yard about 30 minutes later….and that was the extent of our time outdoors until dusk when I went out to cut some day lilies that were blooming in the front flowerbed; I’ll enjoy them in a vase rather than taking the chance of the deer eating the flowers and buds.

I enjoy browsing vintage books online (usually on Internet Archive) and gleaning images that I like from the old books. I created a slide show of some from this month – one from each source. The botanical prints are a continuing interest and I’m always pleasantly surprised when I find books of prints that I haven’t seen before. There are quite a few books about birds too. I mix in art and history books. Sometimes I realize that because the books are old…every image is a bit of history. When there is an image of a child, I realize that the individual is probably already buried; many are from a time that childhood was a dangerous time of life and some might not have survived to adulthood; others could have lived a very long time but would be improbably old by now. The image is just an instant of the past – unreal in the sense that is frozen. The depictions of places people lived and the things they were doing is also historical. There are 36 images in this show.

I have discovered that I like to take a break and just watch the images play from the folder I collect them in for myself (as many as I like from each volume). I use the Windows File Explorer – Picture Tools – Slide Show. Once it starts you can change the speed and shuffle/loop with a right mouse click.  It’s relaxing to look at interesting….often beautiful…images.

Unique activities for yesterday:

Chairs and wagon on the deck. I enjoy my breakfast on the deck and listen to birdsong. There are a couple of items on the deck that we don’t use very much….they have been there for a long time without getting much use. The white chairs were purchased in 1984 – the year after we moved to the east coast….and have been moved with use from Virginia to our first house in Maryland and now to this one. My best memory of them is from shortly after we bought them, and my grandmother visited; we ate our lunch around a table on the patio sitting in the chairs – dogwood petals falling from the tree overhead.

The wagon is more recent…probably purchased in 1992. There was a trauma involving the wagon just as my daughter was learning to talk clearly. My mother was pulling her in the wagon down the slope of the driveway and my daughter fell out. She lay sprawled on the concrete and looked up and said, “Was that an accident or on purpose?” We moved it to our current house when my daughter was 5 years old…but I’m not sure we’ll move it again.

eBotantical Prints – November 2019

All the books added in November were from the same authors. Charles and Edouard Morren were a father and son. They produced 35 volumes of La Belgique Horticole from 1851-1885. Both men died in their early 50s and there was no continuation of the publication after the death of the son.  This monthly post has sample images from 28 of those volumes and I will continue the series into December (posting the images for those volumes in early January). The illustrations are quite varied. They are often illustrations rather that full botanical prints – still beautiful and particularly appealing this time of year when our gardens here in Maryland are mostly brown. I’m looking forward to the upcoming volumes. The list for the individual volumes from this month is after the sample images; for a list of all the volumes Internet Archive has – check here.

Gustav Hegi’s Illustrierte Flora von Mittel-Europa

Hathi Trust has multiple versions of the Illustrierte Flora von Mittel-Europa (Illustrated Flora of Central Europe) that Gustav Hegi edited between 1908 and 1931. There are editions published after his originals as well. I chose to peruse the volume made available by University of Michigan. The first 6 volumes (some of the volumes have multiple parts so there are more that 6 items in all) have colorful images – lots of plants on one page. The sample images from the 12 volumes I looked at – lots of color and variety on a winter day.

According to Wikipedia, the author, a Swiss botanist, wrote about a third of the content…and edited the whole. He obtained his PhD in 1905 and was had been a curator at the Botanic Garden of Munich from 1902-1908. The volumes were published in Munich. He died in 1932. The article contains very little information of his life outside of his publications although he had returned to Switzerland before he died at age 51.

eBotanical Prints – February 2019

Twenty-six botanical print books February; that’s what a lot in a month that only had 28 days! Most of the books were from one series and not in color but the drawings were detailed and often contained a lot of botanical details (flower parts, etc). Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel (ebooks)

Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel was a Dutch botanist. He started out as a medical doctor in 1833 but transitioned to botany by 1846. For more information about his life see Wikipedia or http://www.repository.naturalis.nl/document/570502. He died relatively early and did most of his work on the flora of the Dutch East Indies through correspondence from the University of Amsterdam and then Utrecht University.

The Internet Archive has two of his books available and I’ve picked two images from each of them:

Botany for the Artist (ebook)

Simblet, Sarah. Botany for the Artist. Great Britain: Dorling Kindersley Limited. 2010. Available from Internet Archive here.

It is packaged on the Internet Archive with Botany Illustrated – available via the same link. The author is an artist rather than a botanist but her passion for creating botanical art comes through in this book. It contains a lot of photographs, some botanical print history and how to draw plants. I’ll never be a botanical artist, but I appreciated this book.

Botanical prints are something I enjoy particularly in the winter when the outdoors here is not as colorful; many of the trees are bare and we are having a lot of cloudy days. Browsing through a book like this is an armchair version of walking through a conservatory or traveling to some other part of the globe where the air temperature is much warmer!

I picked four images to share here….so many beautiful ones to choose from …worth a browse through the whole book on a January day indoors.

It was another big month for botanical print books….27 added to the big list (here) and listed in this post.

I’ll write a little more about some of the books in later posts. Today’s post is a slide show of the 27 sample images and then the list of books. There are over 1500 books in the big list of digital eBooks available online free of charge. All the books for this month are from the Internet Archive.

eBotanical Prints – September 2018

It was a light month for botanical books because I was busy with some volumes of insect prints.

October is set up to be a big month for botanical print books because of the many volumes of Louis van Houtte words that are available on Internet Archive. I found the first volume toward the end of September and am savoring them all through October. There are at least 20 volumes!

eBotanical Prints – April 2018

I am allowing myself one botanical print post in the main blog of this site each month. This is it for April – the books that contained botanical images that I read during the month. I’ll post about individual books in the eBotanicalPrints part of the site: Botanical blog. Also take a look at the botanical eBooks list to find links to over 1,000 eBooks available free from various sources.

I read 16 botanical eBooks in April and 15 sample images are shown below. The 16th book (about seed pods) is one that is still under copyright but is available for checkout from Internet Archive. The links to the books are below the sample images.

eBotanical Prints – March 2018

I added the 2009 books to the list on the eBotanicalPrints area of the site and that completes the gleanings from previous years. Take a look at the Botanical Blog.  I’ll keep adding books I browse each month to the list because there still seem to be lots of botanical print books out there being scanned and made available online.

I’ve also formulated a table for the list of books which makes it easier to sort the list….and I’ve added the copyright date.

I only have 12 books to add to the list from March. The sample images are shown first…then the list with links to the ebooks. Enjoy!

eBotanicalPrints – January 2018

The eBotanicalPrints area of the site increased a lot in January. The books I found in 2013-2017 were added to the lists in January and since then I’ve added the books from 2012 and January 2018 to the list…so that they number of botanical ebooks (with links to the book and sample image) number over 800 at this point. Check out the Botanical Blog to see posts on highlighting books and updates to the area as they happen. There are also annual shows in the botanical blog. The lists are accessed either from the pulldown from eBotanicalPrints (from the top of this page) or via these links: by title, by author.

Ten Little Celebrations – January 2018

This month was mostly cold…mostly spent at home…but I easily found lot of little celebrations!

I celebrated the model trains at Brookside…on the very last day of the exhibit – January 1. I enjoyed volunteering to help the exhibit run smoothly…and experiencing the trains through the eyes of the children.

I made a lot of progress on the collection of botanical prints eBooks area of my website. I am adding to the list of links as I work back through the annual lists of books I read/browsed…picking out the ones that contained botanical prints. So far, the books I found from 2013-2017 are listed – each with a link to the free eBook and a sample image. I celebrated the beauty of the botanical prints the whole time I worked on the collection…and may have the ones from 2012 ready later today.

We had some very cold days early in January and I celebrated my well-stocked pantry, freezer and refrigerator – as I stayed warm at home!

The were three Winter Wellness sessions this January hosted by Howard County Conservancy for their volunteers. Each included a lecture and hike…worth celebrating.

Conowingo was not as scenic for birds as it has been at times in the past…but the ice on the rocks and railings was worth seeing. I enjoyed being out and about….maybe that was more what I was celebrating.

I had a cold earlier in the month – so of course I celebrated as soon as a started feeling better.

In November I got my box of Foldscopes and was so busy I didn’t put one together until recently. I was pleased to finally do it…celebrated my origami-type success with the pieces and my initial results.

My area of Maryland has been very dry. We’ve only had dustings of snow…but we had a day recently that is rained gently for most of the day. We needed the moisture….and I celebrated that it came in an easy-to-handle form.

I had a dental appointment as was pleased that I had no cavities! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a new one and I celebrate after each appointment.

I started out on my weekly grocery shopping drive and notice the sunrise over our CSA buildings. I pulled off the road to take a picture. It was a good way to celebrate the day’s beginning.

There is also a Botanical Blog that I’ll use to avoid overwhelming the main blog with botanical oriented content. There is a new area of the website – a collection of links to and sample images from eBooks freely available online containing botanical prints; I’m calling it

It’s accessed from the site menu and currently includes 4 things: a general introduction, a botanical blog (where I’m showcasing sample images and providing more detail about my recent finds), and then links to the books themselves sorted by author and title.
